YouTube thumbnail maker

A thumbnail maker should take you from “I know what this video is about” to a finished 1280×720 file quickly — without taking away control. Here’s how that works in Thumbora, plus a checklist you can use with any tool.

Demo composition drawn in code by the Thumbora team — not an AI generation.

What makes a thumbnail work

A thumbnail has one job: make the right viewer want to watch this particular video. That comes down to three things:

  1. A clear subject. One face, object or scene that can be read in a fraction of a second.
  2. A short promise. Two to four words that add to the title instead of repeating it.
  3. Contrast. Subject, text and background are separated by light and color.

Everything else — style, palette, composition — supports these three.

Making a thumbnail in Thumbora, step by step

  1. Create a project with the video title and a one-sentence idea: what we see and what emotion it shows.
  2. Add the text you want on the image. Keep it short — you can change it later.
  3. Add inputs if you want: your identity profile, reference thumbnails or the current thumbnail to redesign.
  4. Choose a style and a resolution and how many images to generate. The cost in credits is shown before you start.
  5. Compare the results, star the best one, then fix details with an AI edit or in the editor.
  6. Export a 1280×720 JPG and upload it in YouTube Studio.

Writing a good idea

You don’t need prompt-engineering skills — Thumbora builds the detailed prompt for you. But a precise idea gives better results:

VaguePrecise
“Me with a computer”“Host looking shocked at a glowing PC case, dark room, cyan light from the left”
“Money video”“Stack of cash on a kitchen table, one bill on fire, warm light”
“Travel vlog”“Tent on a ridge at sunrise, a tiny person waving, warm orange sky”

Checklist before you upload

  • Is it readable at about 160 px wide?
  • No more than four words of text, spelled correctly?
  • Nothing important in the bottom-right corner, where the video length appears?
  • Does it add something the title doesn’t say?
  • Does it stand out from the other thumbnails on your channel page and from competitors in search?
  • Is it honest? The video has to deliver what the thumbnail shows.

Templates or AI?

Templates are great for series with a fixed look. AI is better when every video needs its own scene or subject. In Thumbora you can combine both: generate the scene, then keep consistent text and branding in the editor.

Questions

Do I need design experience?

No. You describe the video; Thumbora writes the prompt and generates options. Design knowledge helps you choose and refine, and our guides cover the basics.

Can I make thumbnails with Ukrainian or Russian text?

Yes. Prompts and thumbnail text can be in Ukrainian, Russian, English and other languages. Check the spelling in the result — AI can occasionally distort letters — and correct it with an AI edit or in the editor.

How long does it take?

Writing the idea takes a minute. Most images are generated within a few seconds to about two minutes, depending on the model and resolution.
