Why 1280×720 and not bigger?

1280×720 is the size YouTube recommends and the largest it typically displays. A bigger image with the same ratio is accepted as long as it stays under the file-size limit, but it doesn’t make the thumbnail look better on a phone — what matters is how it reads when it’s small.

If you design at a higher resolution, export a 1280×720 JPG for upload. It keeps the file small and the result predictable.

Safe areas: what YouTube covers

The bottom-right corner shows the video length on almost every surface. Keep text, faces and key objects out of roughly the last fifth of the width at the bottom.

  • Bottom-right: the video length badge.
  • Bottom edge: a red progress bar on videos the viewer has partly watched.
  • Right side on desktop: on hover, buttons such as “Watch later” can appear over the image.

Design for the size people actually see

On phones, a thumbnail is often just a few centimeters wide, and in the desktop sidebar it is around 170 pixels wide. Test at these sizes:

  • Shrink the thumbnail to about 160 px wide and check whether the text is still readable.
  • Use no more than three or four words in a heavy font with strong contrast against the background.
  • Make the subject big: a face or an object should fill a large part of the frame.
  • Check it on both light and dark backgrounds — YouTube’s interface has both.

JPG, PNG or GIF?

JPG is the safest choice for photos and gradients: at 1280×720 and normal quality it’s usually far below 2 MB. PNG keeps flat colors and text perfectly sharp but files are larger — if a PNG goes over 2 MB, export as JPG. GIF is accepted, but it’s rarely the right choice for a thumbnail.

Thumbora exports PNG, JPG and WebP. WebP is handy for websites; for YouTube, choose JPG or PNG at 1280×720.

Making a correctly sized thumbnail in Thumbora

  1. Generate — Thumbora always produces 16:9 images.
  2. Pick the best version and fix details with an AI edit or in the editor.
  3. Export as JPG at 1280×720.
  4. In YouTube Studio, open the video’s details and upload the file as its thumbnail.

If you export at a size larger than the generated image, Thumbora upscales it and labels the file as upscaled — it doesn’t add real detail.

Questions

What is the best size for a YouTube thumbnail?

1280×720 pixels at 16:9. It’s YouTube’s recommendation and the largest size it usually displays.

What is the minimum size?

The image has to be at least 640 pixels wide. Smaller images are rejected or look blurry.

Why was my thumbnail rejected?

Usually the file is larger than 2 MB, the format isn’t supported, or the account isn’t verified for custom thumbnails. A thumbnail can also be removed if it violates YouTube’s policies.

Will a higher-resolution thumbnail look sharper?

Not noticeably. YouTube displays thumbnails at up to 1280×720, so extra pixels aren’t visible to viewers. Clarity at small sizes matters much more.
