How to download a YouTube thumbnail
- Copy the video link: Share → Copy link in the YouTube app, or the address bar on a computer.
- Paste it into the field above — the thumbnail loads right away.
- Pick a size and press Download. On a phone you can also press and hold the picture and save it.
It works with regular videos, Shorts, live streams and youtu.be links. Only the thumbnail image is downloaded, never the video, and it comes straight from YouTube’s servers.

If there is no HD version, the video was uploaded in low resolution without a custom thumbnail — YouTube simply has no larger image. The 4:3 sizes hold the 16:9 picture between black bars; crop them before you use the image elsewhere.

Is the YouTube thumbnail downloader free?
Yes. Downloading thumbnails is free and needs no account. Only generating a new thumbnail with AI uses credits.
Why is there no HD version of a thumbnail?
YouTube keeps the 1280×720 image only when the video was uploaded in HD or has a custom thumbnail. For older or low-resolution videos the largest size is 640×480 or 480×360.
Does it work with YouTube Shorts?
Yes — paste a youtube.com/shorts/… link. You get the images YouTube keeps for the Short, in the same sizes as for regular videos.
Can I download the thumbnail of a private video?
No. The tool only gets images YouTube shows publicly; private and deleted videos return nothing.
How do I download a thumbnail on a phone?
Paste the link and press Download — or press and hold the picture and choose Save image.
Can I use a downloaded thumbnail on my channel?
Only if it is yours. For a thumbnail in the same style for your video, press Make the same thumbnail — it creates a new image with your face and text.
